This past summer the cross country team went on a 5 day camp in Big Bear, California. They were lead by head coach, Coach Cummings, along with Coach Winebarger and Coach Whitcomb. They were accompanied by Cathedral Catholic and Mt. Carmel, both very competitive teams. Each day they ran along the mountain side and with every trail it got more and more difficult.
But with strong leadership, by Emely Ortega and Lupita Madera on the girls side, and Luis Gonzalez and Andrew Tuttle on the boys side, they prevailed and ran each course with strength and persistence.
On their off time they bonded as a team, by tie-dying shirts and decorating visors, while also making new friendships from the other schools. They adopted a castaway from Mt. Carmel named Brennan. He made Valley Center laugh and they were impressed by his dance moves. He even learned “El Caballo Dorado” a traditional dance played at fiestas. The team also played many fun games like volleyball and 9-square. Overall, Big Bear was an amazing experience for the students as a team and individuals, and who knows maybe we’ll see you up there too next year.
