Ms. Merrick returns as Mrs. Pluth

Q: Where did you teach before VCHS?

A: Actually I taught as a substitute teacher all over San Diego County and I also taught as an unofficial teacher more as a choreographer in Hemet where I grew up.

Q: How long have you been teaching dance?

A: I taught here [Valley Center HS] for almost 7 years and then I left to stay home and raise my daughter and now I’m back to finish off my 7th year.

Q: What subjects are you teaching this year?

A: I have choreography and production, advanced dance, intermediate dance and beginning dance.

Q: Where did you go to college and what did you major in?

A: I got an AA in dance at Mount Sinisalo Community College, then I transferred to UC Riverside and I got my BA in Dance and the focus was choreography and pedagogy. I also got my multiple subject teaching credential at Cal State San Marcos, I was in their Arts cohort program where we integrated arts into the classroom.

Q: What is your favorite thing about teaching at VCHS?

A: The students are very very passionate, even though I coming into a whole new group that I never worked with and who I don’t know and they don’t know me, I still get that feel that I had when I was here 6 years ago. Where they want to become dancers, where they want to become creators, where they want to explore movement, and they’re willing to take any sacrifice there is to work, and to have that 100% commitment. And you don’t get that at every high school.

Q: What’s your favorite pastime activity?

A: Dancing, only because teaching dance is different from actually going and taking a class. The more I take classes the better teacher I am. Also dancing feeds my spirit like which running or lifting weights is for other people, mine is dancing. My other pastime is my family, spending time and doing activities with them.

Q: What is your favorite quote? Or mantra you live by?

A: “I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself” Mikhail Baryshnikov. The reason why this is one of my favorite quotes is because it apply to dance, but it also applies to life too. I feel in this world we live in everyone is trying to compare themselves instead of enjoying what we have.

Q: What is your favorite color?

A: Growing up my favorite color was purple, but now it’s more of grey, green and blue tones.

Q: Favorite food?

A: Mexican food, I would say Italian but since now I’m gluten free and really haven’t found an Italian substitution.

Q: Favorite Animal?

A: My dog TJ, it’s a 3 pound Yorkie.

Q: Any student pet peeves?

A: Coming in with an excuse, excuses are laziness to me.

Q: What is one thing on your bucket list?

A: I want to have enough funds for that I could go on family vacations every summer.

Thank you Mrs. Pluth for your time, we’re glad to have you back!
