Have you noticed how expensive orchids can be when compared to other plants? The main reason why is because orchids can be very difficult in maintaining from the beginning. These seeds can be fairly small and can be easily disturbed by wind and water. It takes at least 12 to 24 months for a seed to grow to a full size foot long plant. Normally orchids are started in laboratories where they are controlled in good conditions. Since this specific plant does not grow fast, it cost a reasonable amount of money than a usual house plant. It can also take 3-6 years for a baby plant to bloom big colorful orchid flowers. Orchids need to be maintained at a certain temperature. They also need a certain amount of humidity. The orchids roots are very different from any other roots. The coat of the root is like plastic. For these types of roots they need to be soaked in water so that they can drink the water. The best way to do this is by placing 2-4 ice cubes on top of the roots. And since it takes some time for the ice cubes to melt, it takes the same amount of time for the roots to actually take in the water. To maintain an orchid at home pretty and healthy try to keep it in a place where there is some shade and sunlight.
